Chip Implants Linked to Animal Tumors

By TODD LEWAN
AP National Writer

When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved implanting microchips in humans, the manufacturer said it would save lives, letting doctors scan the tiny transponders to access patients' medical records almost instantly. The FDA found "reasonable assurance" the device was safe, and a sub-agency even called it one of 2005's top "innovative technologies."

But neither the company nor the regulators publicly mentioned this: A series of veterinary and toxicology studies, dating to the mid-1990s, stated that chip implants had "induced" malignant tumors in some lab mice and rats.

I'm not sure about the situation in the US, but here in the UK virtually all rescue dogs are chipped, and a big proportion of other dogs too. Unless it's under-reporting, or under-diagnosis, we don't seem to have anywhere near the same number of cases of canine cancer that there are in the US, taking into account the larger number of dogs.

I was shocked when I first joined the Canine Cancer Forum by the number of unfortunate people who had more than one dog who had suffered from cancer - here in the UK it seems quite unusual to have one. This may have more to do with reporting or diagnosis of course, but would seem rather worrying...

I don't think there is a cohesive effort to chip all rescue dogs. But as for cancer, it seems like canines and humans alike have been touched by cancer in one way or another in the US. We're trying to be more healthy in our household and have switched our commerical cleaning products with more natural ones, for example. Who knows if that will make a difference...

I do hope so - I hate using chemicals around the house, but sometimes find there really isn't a viable option.

Incidentally, I've tagged you to play the 'name-game' if you feel so inclined in a future post. It took me longer than I expected, so don't feel compelled to if you don't have time! All details are over at my blog....
